Does anyone have drills for Line Outs at U12?
The drill i use at the moment is the hooker throws in to posistion no2 in the line Positions 1 and 3 bind on to make a wedge with the hooker joining the front up with posistion 4 to complete a 5 man wedge .They can join in as a second line and use the no 5 posistion to tidy up and take and drive on the catcher freeing up the scrum half. Then i use the postion 3 in the line as next jum,per ( catcher ) with posistions 2 and 4 forming fist line of wedge with posistion 1 and 5 completeing wedge and hooker cleaning up .I think i have a drill to show this somewhere i will dig it out and post it if i can find it.
At this age, the lineout is such a lottery, it almost seems a waste of time to do more than get the thrower to make sure the ball is thrown straight, hopefully to your tallest/most able catcher, and once secured, talk about an open and a blind option. Last year, I coached a great football thrower in, and we threw it over the (4 man) line out for our scrummie to catch....
I agree with Steve to an extent. Without lifting, the lineout is always a 'lottery', however, I believe that you need to coach the lineout to more than just being able to throw the ball in straight and accurately.
Build up lineout jumpers ability to move and jump for the ball, movement and a good jump will then be ingrained in them so life will be easier when they come to lifting at U16. It also builds up better timing of the throw. I see so many coaches that see coaching the lineout as a whole new game at U16 rugby.....IT ISN'T!!!
Get players used to beating their markers and jumping for the ball. There's loads of fun games you can use for U10s-U12s for the lineout.
